Background

Ed McLaughlin was named President and CTO of Mastercard in 2017. In this role, McLaughlin oversees the company’s technology function which comprises the global payments network, enterprise platforms, tech infrastructure and operations, information security and global technology hubs. He joined Mastercard in 2005 and held various roles leading payment functions. From 2010 to 2017, he served as Chief Emerging Payments Officer.

Under McLaughlin’s leadership, Mastercard has been at the forefront of applying AI technologies to its products for years. For instance, through its decision management platform, Mastercard utilizes AI to prevent billions of dollars of fraud annually. McLaughlin’s teams are also employing AI to combat cybersecurity threats using quantum-resistant techniques. In late 2023, Dynamic Yield, a Mastercard company, released its gen-AI-powered personal assistant called Shopping Muse.

“So some things I'm really enthusiastic about are things like code, assist and developer productivity, and we're seeing some good things there. The way you can deal with complex amounts of unstructured data and information like for customer support or other things like that. There's a lot of complexities to our network. So helping people understand and navigate that, we see real, real value there. So what we're looking at is what are the hard problems we've always had, that these particular techniques can bring most value to and then layer on top of that and apply for that."
